The first precise routes date back to the 14th century. In 1791, at the height of the French Revolution, the town's inhabitants joined a federation of communes in the Haut Comtat and around Carpentras, the "Union de Sainte-Cécile", which brought together 60 communes loyal to the Pope. In 1793, Sainte-Cécile became Cécile-la-Montagnarde for just eight months. In 1918, a directive from the French Ministry of the Interior, aimed at putting an end to confusion between communes, enjoined them to add additions to their names. Due to the richness of its vineyards and its reputation, Sainte-Cécile became Sainte-Cécile-les-Vignes in 1920.
