The heart of the old village is tightened inside its fortified ramparts of the XIVth, of which remains the Porte Neuve pierced in a tower, which kept the conduit of the chains of the drawbridge and its corner turrets. As for the Clementine tower, it was the keep of the castle of Monteux. You should know that it was in Monteux that Pope Clement V - elected in 1305 - prepared the constitution of the Council of Vienna and wrote the Decrees. Nowadays, Monteux is a dynamic market gardener and likes to celebrate its region. Monteux is famous for its pilgrimage to Saint-Gens, and its famous fireworks display which attracts tens of thousands of people every year.
