Standing on a narrow rocky ridge, this village, classified as one of France's Most Beautiful Villages, has a serious, austere air. Its exceptional panorama and light attract painters (P. Picasso) and writers. The village has been inhabited for thousands of years. Its name evokes the Roman period, and is associated with the goddess Minerva. The oldest sign of life is the Pichouno dolmen, dating back to Neolithic times. In the Middle Ages, the town's two entrance gates (Saint-Sauveur and Notre-Dame), an imposing citadel and numerous underground passageways all point to major activity as early as the 12th century. In the 16th century, it was the center of Protestantism in the region.
