Huddled within its ramparts, Malaucène takes shape around its ancient fort on the village's highest point. The old town is partly surrounded by a remarkable courtyard planted with centuries-old plane trees. All that remains of Malaucène's fortified walls are a few gates, including the Porte Soubeyran, which was once used as a gallows for the public hanging of criminals. In the first half of the 14th century, the town was the summer residence of Pope Clement V, who left his mark with the church of Saint-Michel-et-Saint-Pierre, built in 1309 on the site of a former temple.
