First called Luzmari at the beginning of the 11th century, it was not until a hundred years later that the town became Lucemarino, a small village built around two Benedictine monasteries. In the 15th century, an important Waldensian colony had settled in the village and worked the land. During the Wars of Religion, the Catholics made numerous attacks. In April 1545, the village was set on fire by the troops of Paulin de La Garde, under the authority of the first president of the Parliament of Aix, Jean Maynier, Lord of Oppède. The massacre of the Vaudois in Luberon is written in red ink. Today, Lourmarin is one of the most visited villages in the southern Luberon. You can stroll in its narrow streets, lined with beautiful old houses and private mansions; you can rest on a shady square... It is the sweetness of living in the Provencal way where each moment is accompanied by the melodious and incomparable song of the cicadas! Art lovers will be served, galleries and workshops are numerous in the center. Fridays are market days, a joy to fill your basket with good products, crafts and even to get dressed at mini prices; good deals abound in the stands along the meadow separating you from the castle. The latter is the first Renaissance castle in Provence built in the 15th and 16th centuries by the Agoult family. Classified as a historical monument since 1973, it is today a cultural place with a rich and varied program. From its terraces, you can enjoy an exceptional view of the village of Lourmarin and the Luberon massif.
