Crossed by several canals, the Venise Comtadine was built in the 12th century on stilts in the swamps. Its large mossy paddle wheels once powered paper mills and spinning mills. In the 19th century, there were 62 paddle wheels in the city, only 5 of which are still in operation today. The streets with evocative names - of the Otter, of the Eel, of the Trout, of the Crayfish - recall that Isle was once a fishing village with a brotherhood in the 16th century. With its cobbled streets and vaulted passages, l'Isle sur la Sorgue has been the capital of antiques and second-hand goods since the 1970s.
