The cultivation of vines and olives in Gigondas dates back to antiquity. In the 1st century BC, Julius Caesar established a colony of veterans. One of them is said to have been in such a jovial mood that he was nicknamed Jucundus, "the Merry One", giving the village the name Jocundatis, then Gigondas.
