The Vallis Clausa site inspired the name of the village and determined the name of the département. La Fontaine-de-Vaucluse recently joined the Grand Site de France network. Its reputation dates back to antiquity, when the spring gushing out of the 230 m-high cliff face was a popular attraction. This spring, known here as the fountain, is the most powerful in France and the 5th most powerful in the world, with an annual water flow of over 600 million cubic metres! It was this fountain and the Sorgue that led to the installation of the first paper mills in the 15th century, a true industrial vocation ensuring excellent profits for the town.
