A synagogue with rich colors and gilding that is at once a place of prayer, a school and a community assembly.

In the heart of the old town, the 18th-century synagogue is a masterpiece of Comtadin Baroque art, unique in the world. The richness of its gilding and the colors used (yellow, blue and pink) are surprising. The chair of the prophet Elijah perched on his cloud above the circumcision chair is also unique. At once a place of prayer, a school and a community assembly, for lack of space the women had to listen to the reading of the Torah from the basement.

Cette synagogue est vraiment a decouvrir. En plein coeur de ville...meme la rue raconte encore le passé. Je vous co seille d etre accompagne d un guide afin de vraiment decourvrir tous les details de l histoire de ces murs.

C'est sur les conseils avisés de l'office du tourisme que j'ai découvert cette synagogue, que je n'aurais jamais eu l'idée de visiter.
C'est un mélange heureux des 2 cultures juive et provençale, illustré par cette photo d'une grand mère juive en costume provençal.
J'ai beaucoup appris sur cette communauté, comme par exemple, l'existence de cimetières de livres, qui ne sont jamais jetés.
