The village sits on a hill on the banks of the Durance. Its name comes from the Caudellenses tribe, who settled on the Castellar oppidum. This was in protohistoric times. It naturally became the first capital of the Pays d'Aigues. In the Middle Ages, life was organized around the castle built in the 11th century by Lord Rostaing de Cadenet. The castle was rebuilt several times, then burnt down during the French Revolution and finally dismantled, and today only a few ruins remain. After suffering several setbacks, Cadenet regained a certain prosperity in the first half of the 19th century with the development of the basket-making industry.
