Built in a pyramid shape around its rocky peak, Bonnieux, one of France's most beautiful villages, dominates the valley, offering exceptional views of the mountains and the village opposite, whose rival it was for many years during the Wars of Religion. The area has been inhabited since Neolithic times, and in Gallo-Roman times, the village stood at the foot of its current location. Roman territory (Bitrona) in the 1st century AD, the Cádiz-Mila road ran through the area. The Pont Julien, built on the plain, provided a link with the secondary road to Lourmarin. It wasn't until the Middle Ages, for safety reasons, that the inhabitants moved back in.
