The village of Althen-des-Paluds is one of the most recent villages in the Vaucluse since it only appeared in the middle of the 19th century. It spreads over a plain of 625 hectares. Althen is the name of Jean Althen who developed the culture of madder in the 19th century and made the fortune of the village. Madder gave a red dye which was used to colour the uniforms of French soldiers. As for palud, it means the marshes. It should be noted that the region was drained in the 16th century. And there you have it, the mystery is over. For the rest, the village has no real tourist interest. It gathers especially all those who work in Avignon
