OLD CITY
The old town of Toulon has a multitude of small pedestrian streets, squares, with the place Puget to the port.
Rue d'Alger. This artery, as winding as one could wish, is undoubtedly the most famous in Toulon. It goes down from the Place Puget to the port and hosts a thousand shops of all kinds: the big names in fashion, small inexpensive boutiques, jewelers, etc. It is crisscrossed by a multitude of small pedestrian streets, squares and crossings to go from one street to another - open your eyes to discover them! It ends at the port, in front of the ferry terminal that serves Saint-Mandrier, la Seyne-sur-Mer, les Sablettes and Tamaris by boat. Two steps to your left, discover the splendid bronze sculpture of the Genius of Navigation by Louis Daumas.
Pedestrian squares in the city center. Place Puget, where the Three Dolphins fountain - the work of the sculptor Chastel - is enthroned. It is so covered with moss that you will have trouble guessing the famous dolphins! The Saint-Vincent square and its 17th century fountain. The Place à l'Huile and the Maison des Têtes, decorated with twenty-seven faces with different expressions. On the place Raimu, a set of bronze statues represents the famous card game of César, by Marcel Pagnol, with Raimu playing his own role.
Cours Lafayette. The Cours Lafayette, entirely pedestrianized, was nicknamed "the pavement of love" because couples used to come there to chat. From Tuesday to Sunday it hosts one of the most famous markets in Provence, which inspired Gilbert Bécaud, born in Toulon, to write one of his most famous songs. You will find cafés, restaurants and stores of all kinds. On the rue Paul Lendrin, nicknamed the "petit cours", you will taste the best cade of the city at Cademan, a predestined name! At the bottom of the courtyard, at the corner of rue de la République, admire the baroque architecture of the church of Saint-François de Paule, whose first stone was laid in 1744.
Rue Pierre Sémard, new street of the arts. The wind of art is now blowing on Rue Pierre Sémard! Inaugurated in early 2017, this major axis of the old city has a brand new face. Art galleries and other artists' studios-boutiques have taken possession of the premises: this little corner of the heart of Toulon has regained its letters of nobility by becoming a major cultural hub.
The adjoiningPlace de l'Equerre has also undergone a facelift: since 2017, it has been home to a nice array of cafés, bars, boutiques and conceptual restaurants, and is regularly the scene of cultural and musical events.
