Perched on a rock at an altitude of 424 m, this village was, from the beginning of the 11th century, the stronghold of the famous Provencal family of Pontevès. In 1650, François de Pontevès sold the seigneury to Pierre Maurel, a businessman and financier from Aix-en-Provence, who undertook a complete overhaul of the site. But little by little the building fell into disrepair. From the esplanade of the castle in any case, the panorama embraces the Sainte-Baume massif to the south, the Sainte-Victoire mountain to the west and the Verdon to the north. The traces of the 17th century redevelopment are still visible. Today, the village comes alive every Friday morning with the weekly market.
