In the 16th century, the Sainte-Baume massif was the site of a very popular activity: ice making. In the absence of an industrial process, water from streams and springs was stored in cement tanks. When it was frozen, it was stored in ice houses, vast pits 10 to 20 metres deep dug in the ground or in the rock and topped by a stone construction with a roof of tiles laid on a layer of earth. In summer, the ice was cut up and transported at night. Among the ice houses still visible today, the most remarkable is the Pivaut ice house.
