Le Mayet is a strategic gateway between the Besbre and Sichon valleys, and appears to have been inhabited for a very long time. A feudal castle, joined to the barony of Montgilbert in 1334, became the principal residence of the Saulx-Tavannes family in the 17th century. In the 19th century, it was a prosperous, mainly agricultural town with numerous fairs. Every year, there's still a big basket fair, and summer events such as the Grands Jeux de la Montagne bourbonnaise (Bourbonnaise Mountain Games), where colossus from the surrounding villages compete in friendship. Weekly market on Monday mornings.
