Nestled in the heart of the Maures massif, La Garde-Freinet, an old Provencal village, has preserved its authenticity. Its position as a sentinel at the top of the pass earned it the name of "garde". Freinet, added later, refers to the territory of Fraxinetum, a vast plain populated by ash trees, from Gassin to Grimaud. In the 19th century, the village experienced a rapid and considerable growth that accompanied the explosion of the cork industry. Witnesses of the golden age of La Garde-Freinet, the new districts of Aires and Place Neuve are grafted onto the winding streets of the old village, to give it the appearance it still has today.
