The history of La Crau is linked to that of the town of Hyères to which it was attached until 1853. Independent since the promulgation that year of an edict of Napoleon III, it became a large agricultural commune in an alluvial plain, framed by Mount Fenouillet and the Coudon. Irrigated largely by the waters of the Gapeau - a lovely walk along its banks - and the Réal-Martin, its fertile land allows horticultural and wine growing which has largely contributed to its notoriety. Even today, the producers of La Crau are still widely represented at the local markets; the village market, moreover, is held on Wednesday and Sunday mornings.
