According to legend, the origin of the name of this small village, Figa Nera - the black flight - dates back to the year 950, when the Saracens were routed by the inhabitants. To commemorate this event, the Cistercian monks erected the votive chapel of Our Lady of the Olive Trees. The centre of the old village has many picturesque narrow streets that lead to the church of Saint-Michel, built on the former site of the castle of the Counts of Ventimiglia, to the old municipal washhouse and to the garden of scents. The Provençal name of the town, Figaniero, gave its name to a variety of olive trees, the Figaniero plant
