The origin of its name comes from the Latin word faventia, which means "favorable place". In the Middle Ages, Fayence belonged to the bishops of Fréjus who came to retire there in summer to escape the heat of the coast. In 1710, Cardinal Fleury had the castle demolished. During the Revolution, the bishopric gave up its seigniorial rights to the inhabitants who lived from the cultivation of wheat, vines, olive oil and until the 19th century from the cultivation and picking of flowers for the perfume industry. Today, tourism has taken over. The presence of updrafts in the sky of Fayence has favored the establishment of the gliding center.
