The history of Cavalaire, which takes its name from the Greek colony Heracléa Caccabaria that took up a position in the bay, began 800 BC with the Ligurians who settled in their oppidum at Montjean. A small fishing hamlet dependent on Gassin in the 18th century, this young commune of the Var, created in 1929 and classified as a seaside resort in 1956, is located at the end of a very sheltered bay, between Cap Cavalaire to the west and Cap Lardier to the east. It boasts a long sandy beach stretching over 4 kilometers (where the3rd American Infantry Division landed on August 15, 1944), ideal for tourist and water sports activities.
