Numerous megaliths have been discovered in the vicinity of this village located in the green valley of the Issole. The city, originally called Matavo, was on the route of the Aurelian Way which linked Italy to Spain. In the Middle Ages, it was a dependency of the county of Fréjus and took the name of Castrum de Cabassa. It remains today to discover the narrow streets remained intact, the ramparts, the doors and the northern poterne. In winter the temperatures can drop to -15 degrees. Harsh conditions for agriculture and viticulture with sometimes massive losses of harvest. The market is held on Tuesdays in the Place Dotto.
