Summer residence of the Count of Provence in the 12th century, Brignoles saw the birth of Saint Louis, patron saint of the city. Established in the most fertile lands of the Var since Roman times, the city of Brignoles suffered from the wars between Francis I and Charles V. The Spanish troops were repulsed many times, but the city of Var was finally defeated in 1536, occupied by the enemy and even renamed. The Wars of Religion opened a new chapter of misfortune. In the 19th century, the opening of bauxite mines and the development of tanning and dyeing activities brought the city real prosperity
