The village's fame is due above all to its enfant terrible, Gaspard de Besse. In 1757, Gaspard Bouis, known as Gaspard de Besse, took to the woods to become the Robin Hood of the garrigues At the age of 24, he was captured and beaten in Aix-en-Provence. The small, heart-shaped lake (alas, a victim of drought) and seven fountains in the village center make Besse an aquatic city. In 1847, Joseph Lambot, the inventor of reinforced concrete, tried his hand at sailing a boat on the lake. Don't miss the church, built in the 17th century on 11th-century foundations.
