Barjols, whose name comes from its Provencal roots - barre: hills, and jouls: pretty - was born around the 12th century, thanks to the presence of water. The village with its 32 fountains and 13 wash houses, all fed by a source of drinking water, lived for a long time from its tanneries which ensured its prosperity. In the 19th century, Barjols was still the capital of the leather industry and had no less than 24 tanneries and 19 tanning mills. Unfortunately, competition gradually caused this industry to decline and the last tannery closed in 1983. There are still some buildings of the tanneries Fassy, Planchud and Vaillant founded in 1608 and closed in 1981.
