PUMPER LAKE
The Serre-Ponçon dam is the second-largest man-made reservoir in Europe
It was in 1895 that the definitive plan for a dam on the Serre-Ponçon site was drawn up, forcing the exodus of 1,500 inhabitants. Construction of the colossal dam did not begin until 1955, and was completed in 1961. With its 120 m-high dam, the Serre-Ponçon dam is the second-largest artificial water reservoir in Europe, and its figures are impressive: 1.2 billionm3 of water and 2,800 ha of surface area supply 16 hydroelectric power stations, providing 10% of France's hydroelectric output and 50% of the PACA region's production. While you can visit the dam, there's no shortage of leisure activities on a lake with pure waters - exceptionally low due to drought, which can limit certain water sports activities in summer - and around a major tourist hub. You'll find 9 Pavillon Bleu beaches (the most awarded lake in France and the first freshwater port to be certified Port propre), equipped and supervised for bathing in summer. And there's no shortage of remarkable sites around a lake that links the Hautes-Alpes and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence: the coiffed damselflies, Boscodon Abbey, the town of Embrun, the PNR des Ecrins and the many panoramic views of a lake to discover with the whole family. The Aiguilles de Chabrières, accessible from the Réallon ski resort, are just one of the natural vantage points from which to admire this fantastic lake. The sunset over the lake offers other magical moments.
