Visitors to Mont-Dauphin, a town in the Vauban network and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will discover a unique setting. A visit here is a must to admire the fortified town, which, like so many others, was built by Vauban. Vauban designed not just a military complex here, but a veritable city, a checkerboard pattern of impeccably laid-out streets designed to house 2,000 people. In fact, the work was never completed, and in the end, trees took over a large part of the ramparts. Never attacked, the site retains its beautiful architecture intact, well served by the pink hues of the local marble.
