The ski resorts of Le Sauze and its neighbor, Le Super-Sauze, range in altitude from 1,380 m to 1,700 m, nestling at the foot of singular peaks such as Le Chapeau de Gendarme and Le Pain de sucre. Formerly known as Salix in the 13th century, Sauze takes its name from the Latin word for willow, suggesting that these mountains were once covered with willows rather than today's larches. Compared to its neighbor Pra-Loup, this is a smaller resort with a family atmosphere. Preserving the warm, natural character typical of small mountain communities, Le Sauze is made up of seven hamlets, all preserving a way of life in harmony with nature. In 1934, it was decided to build a 300 m ski lift, the only one of its kind in France at the time, marking the creation of a French ski school in 1938. In 1950, a second lift was built, serving the "savonnette" slope opposite the Hôtel des Neiges. The resort went from strength to strength, and in 1958 opened a superior resort, the Super-Sauze, with a ski school lift and the Hôtel du Brec. In summer, Le Sauze also offers a variety of sporting activities for thrill-seekers, including a four-hour hike to the foot of the Chapeau de Gendarme, 2,685 m above sea level. From here, you can enjoy a magnificent panorama of the Barcelonnette basin, with views stretching all the way to the Grand Bérard massif, peaking at over 3,000 m on the other side of the valley.
