L'Argentière-la-Bessée, the gateway to the Pays des Ecrins, takes its name from the silver mines exploited since the 10th century. Abandoned in the 20th century, the site has been the subject of archaeological excavations, uncovering many remains and allowing visits to the underground galleries. L'Argentière-la-Bessée has a unique area in the Vallon du Fournel, the Deslioures reserve and its field of blue thistles. In January, L'Argentière-la-Bessée becomes the world capital of ice climbing. As soon as the snow melts, the town becomes an outdoor and white water sports paradise again thanks to its slalom stadium on the Durance.
