With just under 600 inhabitants, Jaligny-sur-Bresbe is one of the oldest towns in the Bourbonnais. As early as the 11th century, the Jaligny family, a branch of the House of Chatillon-sur-Marne located in Champagne, was one of the most powerful in the region. Jaligny is home to a beautiful castle built in the 15th century and having undergone major restorations in the 19th century, unfortunately closed to visitors, and the Val-de-Besbre Aquarium. Also worth seeing is the 11th century Romanesque church and the tower, partly destroyed during the Hundred Years' War, the last vestige of the town's surrounding wall, which had eight walls in medieval times.
