Clinging to its rocky outcrop, overlooking the Durance River, the old town owes the Celtic origin of its name to its location: ebre (water) and dun (fortress, hill). Particularly powerful in the Middle Ages, the town fell into a long period of lethargy after being sacked by the troops of Victor-Amédée II of Savoy in 1692. In the 20th century, the town enjoyed a new lease of life with the construction of the Serre-Ponçon dam in the late 1950s and the creation of the lake. Don't miss the Notre-Dame-du-Réal cathedral (12th and 13th centuries), the Maison des Chanonges (13th century), the Tour d'Embrun (12th century) and the former Cordeliers convent (now the tourist office).
