Château-Ville-Vieille claims to be the historical capital of the Queyras. On display in the town hall, the cupboard with the eight locks bears witness to this. Dating from the 18th century, it recalls the Republic of Escartons, a decision of the 14th century that united the cantons of the Haut-Queyras by giving them the privilege of sharing the tax. Why eight locks? To avoid any misappropriation. It was only opened in the presence of the representatives of the eight communes of the valley, each having their own key. Beyond its symbolic aspect, the cabinet is a beautiful object. In its crypt, the Château Queyras houses a space devoted to the geology of the region.
