The history of Tarascon has its roots far beyond the limits of human memory. The site was already inhabited in prehistoric times. But the city is most famous for a terrible monster that haunted the surrounding swamps in ancient times: the Tarasque. The story goes that the beast was tamed by Martha of Bethany, who came from Judea. A miracle that made the city famous. But rest assured, if you wander around Tarascon today, there is no Tarasque, nor any hideous monster. On the other hand, you will be able to attend festivities around the Tarasque, festivities classified by UNESCO as part of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity, since 2005. A well-deserved honor: the city takes great care of its heritage and welcomes tourists with great arguments. In addition to the many restaurants, the city offers visitors a wide range of activities and visits that are worth the detour, such as the castle, built by the princes of Anjou in the 15th century, which is one of the most beautiful fortresses in Europe, and which also stirs the imagination with its high crenellated towers. But also, the royal collegiate church Sainte-Marthe, built in the 11th and 12th centuries, and the theater, with its baroque facade, the cloister of the Cordeliers, the city hall or the Souleïado museum where you can discover the history of these famous fabrics inspired by the Provencal folklore... In short, you won't have too much time to discover all the wonders of the city
