The Aumance valley has been occupied since prehistoric times. As early as the Neolithic period, the Cordes oppidum was built on a rocky spur. In the5th century, the Gallo-Roman town was burnt down by barbarians, and the inhabitants took refuge further south on two rocks, where they built their first fort, the origin of the future fortified castle. In the 10thcentury , the Bourbon-Archambaud family built a keep and then a small castle. Finally, a town developed under the shelter of the fortress, which in 1254 became one of the Bourbons' seventeen châtellenies, covering more than fifty parishes. Today, it's a dynamic town, with the Châteloy music festival.
