Hauterive is an ancient commune, frequented since prehistoric times. In the 11th century, a Cluniac priory was founded by Saint Robert, but there are only few remains. A Romanesque church, Saint-Pierre, was built in the 12th century. Too small, it was demolished to be replaced by the current Saint-Louis church (1862-1867). The bell tower is that of the old church. As with its neighbors Vichy and Saint-Yorre, many springs were discovered in Hauterive: 27 were drilled between 1889 and 1929. Today, the pavilion of the Saint-Ange spring is one of the town's must-sees.
