Rousset is known from Antiquity by the color of its soil, consisting of red marl which gives it its name. It was home to several hamlets including Saint Privat along the Aurelian Way. Today it is a rural commune at the foot of the Sainte Victoire, with several churches, chapels and a pretty mill. Near the town hall is the statue of Paul Borde, a farmer who sold his field to make the village square. The village overlooks a landscape of olive trees and vines. Located 16 kilometers from Aix-en-Provence, Rousset is part of the Aix agglomeration, like its neighbors Fuveau and Peynier.
