STOCK EXCHANGE BUILDING
The Palais de la Bourse in Marseille, a remarkable work by architect Pascal Coste, houses the Musée de la Marine et de l'Économie.
The first building erected under the Second Empire from 1852 to 1854 by the architect Pascal Coste, the Palais de la Bourse was inaugurated in 1860 in the presence of Prince Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte. We are in the great era of monumental public buildings, which asserts the power of commerce through stone. The building houses the oldest chamber of commerce in France, dating from 1599. The sculpted decoration is entirely dedicated to the glorious history of Marseille's trade with, on either side, allegories of navigation and commercial exchanges. Do not hesitate to enter, the architecture of the building is worth the detour: arcades, white and black marble floors, sculptures recalling the history of the city, a barometer, which replaces the statue of Napoleon III, symbolically decapitated in 1870. The palace hosts exceptional exhibitions such as the one dedicated to the Mona Lisa or the one reproducing the Sistine Chapel in 2023.
