CHURCH OF ST. LOUIS
Curious church in the heart of the village of Saint-Louis in Marseille, a symbol of the Bauhaus movement and one of the few in the country
Strange church this is, to say the least. Rather accustomed to classical religious styles, the people of Marseilles saw this new edifice emerge in the heart of the village of Saint-Louis (the name stems from the popular belief that Saint-Louis made a stop in the area on the Crusades' path), in 1935. Entirely made of concrete for financial reasons, the church is a symbol of the Bauhaus movement and one of the only ones in the country. The statue of Saint Michael at the top of the bell-tower was sculpted in only 6 hours in fresh concrete, a testament to an innovative era and a state of mind towards the working world. The interior features beautiful stained glass windows.
