Between the deep blue sea and the white limestone mountains, the city of Marseille has been one of the most popular destinations in France and the Mediterranean basin for ten years now, when it was chosen as European Capital of Culture in 2013. Visitors and newcomers alike are discovering a metropolis with an authentic cultural identity, often fantasized about, but very real and very much alive. This identity can be felt in every corner of the 111 districts that make up the city. From the Goudes in the south, a former fishing village out of time, to l'Estaque in the north, a working-class district once a haven for artists and painters, you'll never be bored in the Phocaean city. Culture lovers will be delighted by the many and varied monuments and museums, including the Cosquer cave, which opened in 2022 and takes us back to the region's prehistory. Culture buffs can also lose themselves in the antique district, take a trip to the Belle-de-Mai artistic wasteland or explore the city's old quarters, from the Jardin des Vestiges, where the ruins of the Greek city emerge, to the lively, colorful streets of the Panier, with the Mucem as a focal point. Those who prefer wide open spaces and nature will not be outdone, as Marseille is a city resolutely turned towards the open sea, established in a natural environment unique for a city of its size. A trip to the Frioul islands to admire it from the sea or a stroll in the magnificent Calanques national park, just outside the city, a jewel so fragile, so precious and so cherished by the people of Marseille, are a must. More urban visitors, meanwhile, will delight in the exotic Noailles market, the street-art of Cours Julien and the many good addresses scattered here and there in neighborhoods such as Longchamp and Vauban. Marseille, the capital of Provence, is unique and bears no resemblance to its neighbors in Aix and Toulon. It's more than ever worth a visit on your Provencal vacation. Its history has forged it, with the comings and goings of its port, once such an important part of the Mediterranean basin. These arrivals have shaped the city's identity, its language and its way of life. Immerse yourself in a city like no other in the country, which may or may not fascinate, but never leaves you unmoved. Welcome to the world city, where good living rhymes with generosity.

What to visit Marseille?

When to go to Marseille?

The best time to go to Marseille is in the spring or fall, during the low season. Hotel and restaurant rates are much lower than in summer during this period and the beaches are almost deserted. As for the climate, it is ideal, warm but not too hot, and you can often swim from spring and sometimes until the end of November in autumn. Winter is the very low tourist season but the climate remains mild with the possibility of doing many hikes under the sun. The high tourist season is of course the summer, in July and August, the roads are crowded and the prices easily go from simple to triple. It is then necessary to book early if you want to have a place and not to lose all your savings. Marseille is indeed a city that is becoming more and more touristic and it is not only popular with the French but also with a great number of foreign tourists. If you go to Marseille in the summer, it is a good time for outdoor festivals and you can easily find a complete list of these festivals at the tourist office.
