Situated 15 kilometres from Aix-en-Provence and 25 from Marseille, between the Etoile mountain range and Sainte Victoire, Gardanne is the4th largest town in the Aix region with some 20,000 inhabitants. It really took off industrially in the 19th century with the development of the mining basin - sinking of the Biver mine shaft and installation of the former Pechiney aluminium factory. If Gardanne holds to its industrial reputation, others have left their mark on it, such as the Marquis de Gueydan, a councillor at the Court of Auditors, whose descendant bequeathed the castle and all its possessions to the town, or Cézanne who lived there just long enough to immortalise it.
