As early as the Gallo-Roman period, it was at the level of Gannat that communication routes crossed, linking Bourges to Clermont and Vichy to Néris. In the 10th century, a motte castle was built and attracted a first nucleus of population forming the urban centre. Gannat was then a watchtower that depended on the Auvergne. In 1236, the inhabitants obtained a franchise charter from Duke Archambaud VIII. In the 19th century, the town, the capital of the canton, took off with the establishment of several industries and the creation of the railway network. Gannat is a pleasant town, known for its Cultures of the World festival and the Palaeopolis paleontological park.
