Located in the heart of one of the most beautiful harbors in the world, Villefranche-sur-Mer has retained its picturesque charm over the centuries. The town owes its name to the Count of Provence, who gave it a special status as a free trade center. As early as the 16th century, the Duke of Savoy undertook to fortify the roadstead to make it a shelter against enemy incursions and an anchorage base for armed galleys. He had the port of La Darse dug and the citadel built. Until the 18th century, Villefranche was the major port of the Sardinian state. It then became part of the Savoy, and declined when Nice acquired a port in its turn.Originally a fishing port, Villefranche can also boast a long history of naval service. Loaned to the Russian Imperial Navy after 1856, which used it as a maintenance and supply base until the First World War, the harbor was home to the American 6th Fleet after the Second World War. Today, Villefranche-sur-Mer is once again a fishing and pleasure port and is one of the most important stops for cruises in the Mediterranean. A colorful city, full of sunshine and art, its old town and its quays are home to a multitude of good restaurants and bars. The imposing citadel that dominates the city, classified as a historical monument, attracts the curious and the long sandy beach delights swimming enthusiasts
