Museum of Modern Art dedicated to art and young people, with artist exhibitions and a bookshop stocked with books
Built in the 17th century by the Lords of Villeneuve in the heart of the medieval town, this superb château with its 12th-century watchtower was bequeathed to the town in 1966 by Émile Hugues, former minister and mayor of Vence. The site was then entirely dedicated to art and young people, in accordance with the terms of the bequest, whose ambition was to introduce young people to art, and became the Musée de Vence. It developed an annual program of national exhibitions featuring the greatest names in twentieth-century painting. The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art presents exhibitions by a wide variety of artists. A specialized bookshop offers a selection of books, posters and objects related to current events at the Château.
On the2nd floor, the permanent space presents a selection of works by Matisse, leader of Fauvism, from the municipal collection. The painter moved here in 1943, and fell in love with the town and its light, its gentle way of life, which reminded him of the atmosphere of Tahiti, so dear to his heart. Most of the works are graphic (charcoals, lithographs, etchings, etc.). Visitors will discover 64 works reflecting the painter's major themes: portraits and variations, works related to the Rosary chapel, and illustrated book processes. Photographs by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa will also be on display, bearing witness to the artist's daily life during his stay in Vence.
