An obligatory crossing point on the salt route that carried goods from Turin to Menton, Sospel still boasts an old two-arch toll bridge with a control tower built on the central pier. In 1388, Sospel "surrendered" to the Counts of Savoy: a golden age for the town. Later, under the authority and protection of the kings of Sardinia, everything exalted the grandeur of the Baroque style: the new church, the brotherhoods, the convents, the royal college, the houses of wealthy notables. In 1794, however, the revolutionary armies set out to conquer the kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia, and Sospel became a simple commune.
