CHAPEL OF MERCY
Built from 1740 by the Italian architect Bernardo Vidone, this chapel is considered by art historians to be one of the most beautiful Baroque sites in the world. Its history was made in two stages: first of all a convent founded by the Theatins and then the construction of the chapel itself under the convent. The two architectural units are superimposed, only oculi - an opening made on a roof space - separate them. During the Revolution, it was given to the Black Penitents of Mercy who enriched its interior decor. A single nave borders side chapels filled with gold and stucco: gilded mouldings, marble columns, crystal chandeliers, paintings of joyful saints in clouds... Looking up, one can admire the vaults, painted by the painter from Nice Bistolfi. On either side of the choir, there is a fresco: on the left is the Nativity and on the right, the Dormition of the Virgin, subjects little addressed in Western iconography. To see: the sacristy and its wooden panels painted by Louis Bréa and Miralhet.
