Ebreuil was established in the alluvial basin of the Sioule, at the crossing of two Gallo-Roman roads. In 905, fleeing the Norman invasion, the Benedictine monks of Saint-Maixent received permission from Charles the Simple to settle there, making Ebreuil an abbey town for more than eight centuries. Until the 15th century, the town developed in the shadow of the spiritual power of Saint-Léger Abbey. Until the 19th century, the population increases thanks to commercial activities, then the decline begins. It remains a tourist destination thanks to the Sioule valley and is classified as a "Station Verte de Vacances" and labelled "Petites Cités de Caractère®".
