Some locals say that the hinterland of Nice begins in Levens. Perched at an altitude of more than 600 meters, this small medieval village overlooks the valleys of the Var and its tributary, the Vésubie. It offers a superb panorama, from the Mediterranean Sea to the top of the Gelas. Easy to defend because of its location, the village reached its peak in the Middle Ages under the authority of the Grimaldi family and developed around the watchtower and the castle. Its rich past can be discovered along the cobbled streets: house facades, door lintels with Latin inscriptions, courtyards and gardens, old gates of the feudal enclosures... Backed by the old ramparts, the former bourgeois residence acquired by the municipality in 1971 hosts the Metropolitan Tourist Information Office and the Galerie du Portal, a cultural place not to be missed.
