On the border of the Principality of Monaco, stands the commune of La Turbie, 500 meters above the sea. It is on this territory that we find the famous Tête de Chien, a promontory that played an important military role in the 18th century. La Turbie is the highest point of the Via Julia Augusta, an important Roman road that ran along the coast of Liguria and the Alpes-Maritimes. One can admire the Trophy of the Alps, erected to the glory of the Emperor Augustus in 6 BC, a trophy that marked the border between Italy and Gaul at that time. The remains of this remarkable monument still attract a lot of tourists today.
