Built in the 11th century in an oval shape on a rocky outcrop at an altitude of 380 metres to better defend itself from invasions, the village overlooks the Var valley. From the belvedere, you can discover an imposing landscape from the sea to the peaks of the Mercantour (3 orientation tables are installed there). The city remained for a long time in the domain of the Counts of Provence before passing into that of the Dukes of Savoy. Its prosperity came from the cultivation of olive trees, vines and smuggling activities favoured by its position as a border town. Originally, the town was a single entity with Saint-Martin-du-Var, before becoming independent in 1867.
