Duranus, whose name comes from the Latin dur nux (hard nut) because of the many walnut trees in the area, is located on the path taken by muleteers to get to Piedmont. A road of character in balcony on the Vésubie connects Levens to Duranus and offers an exceptional panorama on impressive austere gorges. At the exit of the village in the direction of Saint-Jean-la-Rivière, there is the "Saut des Français". During the resistance of the Barbets against the occupation of the county of Nice by the troops of the Revolution, the captured French soldiers were said to have been thrown from the top of the cliff into the river.
